Why we think Linen is the king of fabrics.

Why we think Linen is the king of fabrics.

Linen is made from the flax plant, which is something of a wonder crop when you look under the hood. When we say linen is inherently one of the most sustainable fabrics in the world, that’s essentially down to the wonders of the flax plant.

Zero Waste.

When it’s grown in northwest Europe – as 85% of the world’s flax is – it produces no waste. From animal fodder and paper to linseed oil and high quality yarns, every part of the flax plant ends up being used.

Rainfall only.

Flax crops in northwest Europe only require rainwater. To put that into context, it typically takes around 8000 litres of extra irrigation to grow just one kilo of cotton.

Fewer fertilisers & pesticides.

The flax plant has few natural enemies and is grown in strict rotation with other crops. Both of which reduce the need for fertilizers and pesticides, while helping preserve local biodiversity.

It’s no accident that flax’s scientific name – linum usitatissimum – translates as ‘most useful flax’. We’re biased but we think its most useful output is linen and our Spring Collection is our most extensive celebration of the fabric ever. Using a broad range of weights and weaves, we’ve tapped into all the best aspects of our favourite fabric.
