Comedian, Alfie Dundas

Comedian, Alfie Dundas

When you’re working on new material, how do you know the difference between an idea that needs more time and one that should be thrown away?

That’s the game in a nutshell really. If you have a new joke that isn’t working exactly how you thought it would, it's then up to you to re-shape it or move on. I’d say those decisions are what define your act. Sometimes it’s just gut instinct!

What’s your favourite style of joke?

I love watching act outs (ie, comedians acting out the joke physically rather than just delivering it), mainly because I’m not very good at them. Some performers are so good at using their bodies to extenuate the joke further. Stop reading this and go watch Sebastian Maniscalco’s ‘Bow and Arrow’ bit on YouTube, then come back and tell me I'm right.

How does a busy performance schedule impact your choice of clothing?

What a great question, Original Fibres, and I’m glad someone finally asked! Clothing is fairly overlooked in comedy and I think that’s a shame. The audience watches us walk on stage before they hear us tell our first joke so the first impression is visual. Plus, it gets hot under the spotlights at a comedy club. I opt for lighter materials (linen, thinner cotton) and staple items that I can mix and match to create multiple outfits if I’m gigging most nights each week.

What’s next for Alfie Dundas?

Edinburgh Fringe baby! That’s all I’m thinking about at the moment. In August I’m taking my debut show to the Fringe (which is a chaotic comedy festival for those not in the know), where I’ll be performing everyday for 24 days. That’s the next major milestone, and then hopefully a tour after that. Then maybe a movie or my own sitcom, and a best-selling book. If anyone has any better ideas, please get in touch.
