Autumn Sounds with Jesse Quin

Autumn Sounds with Jesse Quin

For our latest OF Sounds playlist, we met Jesse Quin – the bassist of iconic UK indie rock band Keane – to ask him some questions about making music, setting up Suffolk’s most unique creative community (think Con Air but with less Nicholas Cage and more recording equipment), and what’s on the horizon for the band.

As well as being a band member of the loved British indie band Keane, you are the founder of a creative community on a former U.S. Airforce base in Suffolk called Old Jet. What do you love most about the business you have created up there?

My favourite thing about Old Jet is the people. The heart of the place is community and creativity — artists supporting one another across disciplines. We have a nice kitchen/dining area where everyone eats together, which fosters connection and collaboration. Being on a disused Air Force base means that Old Jet has a weird blend of concrete utilitarianism and rolling English countryside. Definitely conducive to creativity.

Keane have a new album in the works, what can the fans look forward to?

We have pretty strict quality control. Well, we do our best anyway. We’re always looking for new ways to creatively express human emotions and the experiences we collect in life. We tend to work with a new producer every time. I think that’s really because we don’t repeat ourselves.

How have you thought about clothing in relation to being in a rock band over the years?

At its best it’s a playful opportunity for self-expression. At its worst it creates a deep and unpleasant sense of self-consciousness. Haha. We probably wish we were cooler,  but usually with coolness comes inauthenticity - so I think we’re happiest when we’re just ourselves.
