Alwin Jurtschitsch

Alwin Jurtschitsch

For our latest Fabric Fanatic Episode, we met Alwin Jurtschitsch - who’s widely regarded to be one of Austria’s most exciting young wine producers - at Newcomer Wines in Dalston. We took the chance to ask him some questions about what makes Austrian wines special and what goes into making the types of wines that get people talking.

What makes Austrian wine so special and why do you think it deserves more attention in the UK wine market?

Austria is a country deeply rooted in winemaking tradition and craftsmanship. Despite its small size, Austria has a long history of wine production, with most wineries being small, family-owned operations that have been passed down through generations. Maybe this is why Austria has the highest percentage of Organic and Sustainable certified vineyards—over 25%. While we know Austria remains a niche wine producing country, Austrians love and support their own wines, with most of it being enjoyed locally. That said, the bottles that do make it abroad often find their way into some of the world’s top restaurants. Austria's cool climate and diverse terroirs produce wines of remarkable precision and balance, making them an ideal match for the refined palates of UK wine enthusiasts.

What are the guiding principles of your family-run winery, Jurtschitsch?

As a winery and family deeply rooted in the Kamptal region, we look positively to the future, striving to evolve with mindfulness and dynamism. Through our commitment to organic and regenerative practices in the vineyards, we aim to contribute to preserving and shaping the diversity and beauty of this precious gift of nature. We think in terms of generations, valuing time as a precious and transformative resource. Together, we craft artisanal, vibrant wines that reflect this philosophy. Drawing on the experiences of our parents and grandparents, we embrace a spirit of evolution, creativity, and the courage and enthusiasm to explore new paths. As creators and role models for a new generation, we align our actions with the principles of the common good, guided by social, ecological, and economic values.

At Jurtschitsch you and your wife Stefanie do everything from looking after the soil in which the vines are grown, to making the wine and selling it around the world. What are the most satisfying and challenging parts of the job?

The coolest part of being a winemaker is having a holistic perspective on everything. We see ourselves as both gardeners and scientists, blending our passion for geology and biology into our work. In the morning, you can be hands-on in the vineyard, working as a craftsperson, and by evening, you're at a great restaurant, sharing stories about what goes on in the vineyard and the cellar. It's a balance of creativity and connection, surrounded by a team working in harmony with nature.

There are more and more people who want to explore the diversity of European wine. What would your advice be to help them develop their palette?

Drink what you like, but also be mindful. Consider how your choices can contribute to a better future and the power you have in choosing what you consume.

How would you describe your personal style and what do you look for in a piece of clothing?

I’d say my style is about longevity—my clothes need to age well, like a classic vintage car. I aim for that sweet spot between understated and timeless. I’m also drawn to clothing that feels energetic, with a certain "verticality"—good shape and structure, much like the wines I make. In terms of colour, I tend to lean towards darker tones. I'm not a fashion victim by any means, but I’m definitely picky. I only buy clothes a few times a year, and it’s not easy for me to let them go. Some of my favourite pieces, I’ve worn for years, even repurposing them as work clothes in the vineyards. Others, I’ve set aside for my kids. Most of the clothes I wear carry stories, reminding me of special moments in my life.
